Common Ingredients - Common Problems - Isopropyl Alcohol

!±8± Common Ingredients - Common Problems - Isopropyl Alcohol

Isopropyl Alcohol is a common alcohol used as a solvent and cleaner as well as a preservative. Isopropyl Alcohol is also common in skin scrubs and other body cleansers and purifiers. It is a common chemical used to clean disc drives and other electrical devices.

Isopropyl Alcohol is used as a cleaner in the automotive industry. It has degreasing capabilities and is safe for the removal of break fluid from braking components. It is marketed as being a strong alternative to many household cleaners and a potentially safer alternative to many of them.

It is rather ironic to read the ways in which this Alcohol can be used from Cleaning Automotive components, cleaning electrical equipment through to skin cleansers and disinfectant, considering reports stating that the Alcohol is "...relatively non-toxic and evaporates quickly...". To then continue reading and find that symptoms of isopropyl alcohol poisoning can include nausea, depression, sleepiness, headaches, dizziness and unconsciousness or coma makes its "relative low toxicity" unlikely to the purist such as myself.

Declaring the Alcohol as being non-toxic should be looked upon, as sales pitch while the potential health issues associated with it should be considered fact. It is noted that poisoning can occur from ingestion, absorption or inhalation and that it should be used in a well-ventilated environment while wearing protective gloves. Considering the Alcohol is used in many cosmetic products and disinfectants, it is impossible to avoid consumption. Protective barriers such as gloves are therefore not effective.

On the positive side, Isopropyl Alcohol has been used as an alternative to even more toxic preservatives such as formaldehyde.

Isopropyl Alcohol is used in the cosmetic industry to dissolve other components in the manufacture of cosmetic and skin care products as well as for reducing the foaming action of many skin care ingredients.

Common Problems associated with the use of Isopropyl Alcohol:
The Alcohol is very drying and can strip the skins natural oils leaving the skin open to viruses, bacteria and moulds. It acts on the skin like a solvent, dehydrating the skins natural acid mantle. Isopropyl Alcohol is made from propylene, which is a derivative of the petroleum manufacturing process. This Alcohol can cause premature aging and can promote brown spotting on the skin. An irritant to the skin, eyes and mucous membranes, this Alcohol can also cause upper respiratory problems especially in industry use where exposure is at harmful levels. Accidental Alcohol poisoning in Children is often attributed to consumption of Isopropyl Alcohol through hand sanitisers and cleansers. Some instances report children behaving in a drunken and disorderly state and have included unconsciousness and coma.

Fluoride Filters - Reverse Osmosis Or Activated Alumina Water Filters?

!±8± Fluoride Filters - Reverse Osmosis Or Activated Alumina Water Filters?

There are a couple of ways you can remove fluoride from your water at home. One of these is with a reverse osmosis water filter. These are usually installed under your kitchen sink and they work by forcing water through a membrane that blocks fluoride from passing through so the water that is collected on the other side is free from fluoride and many other contaminants.

The second way to remove fluoride from your drinking water is by using an activated alumina cartridge. This type of fluoride water filter is smaller and sits on your counter top. It is also much less expensive than a reverse osmosis water filter.

Why would you want to remove fluoride from your drinking water? If you have children, they can develop dental fluorosis if they consume too much fluoride while their teeth are developing. Children are at risk for this condition up until they are eight years old. Most children with fluorosis have mild cases which appear as white spots and lines on the teeth that are not too noticeable. Severe cases are less common but these cases can have symptoms of pitted and cracked teeth that are stained brown or black.

Fluoride is also linked to a number of other ailments such as increased risk of cancer and possibly even Alzheimer's disease. Fluoride is actually a pollutant, being created as a by product of iron, copper and aluminum manufacturing. It has even been used as a rat poison and insecticide. Many think there is no clear link between fluoride and decreased dental cavities.

Whether you want to consume water with fluoride is a personal decision. But since most municipal water supplies in the United States have fluoride added, if you want to drink water without it, you will have to use a fluoride filter to get it out.

Boiling water will not remove fluoride, it only concentrates it. Fluoride cannot be removed through distillation either. You should know that bottled water may also have fluoride unless it states on the label it has been filtered using reverse osmosis.

Price may be a deciding factor when trying to choose between the two types of fluoride filters. Reverse osmosis water filters are much more expensive than activated alumina cartridges. Expect to spend a few hundred dollars for a reverse osmosis system while you can pick up an alumina cartridge for well under 0.

Consider also if you need other contaminants removed from your water. A high quality reverse osmosis system can remove chlorine and E-coli along with many other impurities. Become aware of all of your choices before selecting your water filtration system. Water filters have their advantages and disadvantages, which you choose depends a lot upon the source of your drinking water.

Our Polluted Planet

!±8± Our Polluted Planet

It has become evident over the last decades as there has been greater release of information and increasing transparency about previous production and licence that allows many avenues of chemical pollution to continue in our atmosphere, in our water, our food, in our earth and in the subtler toxic elements in the social environment of our times. Many of these factors are no longer an error of western civilization but are also being adopted in some of the less materialistic societies to their future detriment, both physical and spiritual.

The analogy that compared humanity as lemmings hastening to the cliff edge would seem appropriate unless two positive motivations result in changes of action. These involve cessation of the production or creation of the chemical toxic pollutants in our human world and lifestyles and a similar cleansing in our minds and consciousness where thought is the prime mover.

There are many constructive and often isolated efforts to correct any one negative factor that becomes public knowledge. This will usually evoke a counter action from those who are focussed upon the material environment and alert to the danger threatening the quality of our natural elements. But like the hydra-headed monster, cut off one evil and another does seem to sprout immediately until the overall task to 'clean up our environment' can seem impossible. Impossible it is, until the cause is dealt with.

So far the industrialized countries have no obvious will to do this. Environmental toxic elements that are harming us continue to do so until the instruments in our governments find the moral backbone to take severe action to redress severe problems. This is apparently difficult to do in our modern system where the minds of our leaders are polluted by tangled persuasions and interests involving the dollar but forgetful of ramifications that may disallow health and therefore happiness of the people. No longer is this the top priority.

Any effort to purify the physical environment once polluted or poisoned is commendable but is far more difficult than preserving purity and quality. Seeking quality without correcting the injection or source of poisoning is an unreasonable project that has no end.

We need reason to prevail if we are to truly advance beyond technological skills to greater satisfaction of our souls and be able to look to true advancement in the coming decades as we anticipate mankind's coming of age in the twenty first century.

Intelligently correcting the present acknowledged wrongs requires action on many fronts. A few of these are obviously top of the list regarding chemicals and would involve.... strict control of all industrial chemicals to minimize usage; continued phasing out of chemicals use in agriculture; total ban on use of chemicals used in preparation and presentation of food for market or for consumers; total ban on chemicals that have a history of mis-use and are proven to be a causative factor in cancer and other diseases.

Industrial pollution is complex in the issues and in the matters of control but begins with a general reconsideration about possible new methods of manufacture or return to simpler principles. All release of toxic gases and fumes into our air remains a known cause of our major diseases.

Other pollutants involve our water quality with toxic material entering our groundwater from various sources including deliberate injection of chemicals into our water such as chlorine, fluoride and others in attempts to neutralize negative bacterial threats and diseases.

The soil of our Earth planet was once perceived as 'our Mother Earth' is now suffering long drawn out illness arising from our disrespect and the many, many habits that continue to offend our relationship with our material home element that sustains our lives. Should we continue to deposit our wastes from homes, hospitals and industries this way?

Then we have noise pollution and visual pollution, both of which received passing acknowledgment before legislation was made impotent by agencies reluctant to exert control of the negative elements involved. So our permissive governments are disallowing us in some measure the enjoyment of peace, quiet and beauty. Without these tonics for the soul there can be little harmonious relationship with the natural world.

But what about other factors such as radon, a radiation that is directly responsible for killing thousands each year with its invisible negative influence - a gas that is difficult to detect by our senses but that is carcinogenic and along with smoking, a cause of much lung cancer.

Traffic fumes join the accumulating toxins in our atmosphere and are increasing each year as millions of new vehicles appear on the roads. They are directly responsible for various symptoms of ill health including cancer.

And recently Propylene Glycol, (PG) a colourless chemical used in a great many food products, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals as a solvent is under scrutiny.

Present warnings about Bisphenol A, (BPA) another controversial chemical ingredient in the manufacture of milk bottles for infants and other general drink containers is a cause for real concern for both infant health and adults. It is shown to leaches into the liquid and is capable of deranging the endocrine system and our hormones.

And we have not touched yet upon Noise Pollution - and the damage done by amplified sound that not only affects our delicate hearing sense but damages our brains; and the radiation problem associated with mobile phones or cell phones suspected as a factor in brain tumours and other nerve problems that are predicted to increase in the community in the years ahead.

We have really polluted our planet in futile attempts to seek 'newer' and ever promising material rewards. This prevailing attitude has led us to an impasse that equally promises us self destruction if we do not cease our addictions - to our own greed for the new and exciting - to chemical drugs both medicinal and 'recreational' - to discordant sounds - to ugliness, to violence - to material wealth.

We must seek answers that will sustain our lives with body and soul intact and these answers were known thousands of years ago as we know them today.

All that we do requires us to be living in harmony within us and with nature if we wish to recreate a society composed of the finest energies and thoughts of human intelligence.

Could Arsenic Be Causing Your Diabetes?

!±8± Could Arsenic Be Causing Your Diabetes?

Most often diabetes is caused by a person's diet or by heredity. Recently, researchers were surprised to find a link between arsenic and diabetes. Arsenic is a common pollutant found in rivers, streams and well water. People who drink water contaminated with arsenic may increase their risk of developing type two diabetes.

According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, 13 million people live in areas where the levels of arsenic in drinking water exceed EPA health standards.

Arsenic can cause the body to resist insulin which is a hormone that allows our bodies to absorb glucose, a basic sugar produced by our digestive tracts and carried by our blood. When our bodies resist insulin, it means we cannot absorb glucose which then rises to dangerous levels in our bloodstream. This is diabetes.

Arsenic dissolved in water can pass from water, through our digestive systems and into our bloodstream where it will interact with insulin, ruining its ability to carry out its life sustaining function.

For people who reduce their consumption of meat, cheese and synthetic sugars like high fructose corn syrup, the risk of diabetes from polluted water comes as a setback.

Arsenic is an element, meaning it is a basic molecule on the periodic table of the elements. It is a metal which means it can conduct electricity. Arsenic is found in some rock deposits but most often it enters ground water or surface waters from industrial sources like wood treatment plants, smelters, glass production or some agricultural chemicals.

Despite federal regulations requiring that arsenic not be discharged into public waterways and regulations that require water utility companies to filter arsenic, the regulations are failing to protect the public.

Bottled water provides no solution to the dangers of arsenic. Since bottled water is not regulated and usually is city tap water, its possible arsenic could be in bottled water as well.

Removing arsenic from drinking water requires a specialized filter. Metals and some other dissolved minerals are particularly tricky to remove from water as they tend to dissolve into minute particles that are hard to filter out. Two kinds of filters are effective for metal removal: alumina and redox

Alumina is an aluminum filter that strongly attracts other metals and other minerals out of water. A redox filter is one that uses a chemical reaction (reduction/oxidation) to remove arsenic or other metals from water.

The public can protect itself by installing a home water purification system that is capable to removing metals and minerals from water. For more information see the link below.
